Phenylketonuria phenylketonuria is a rare hereditary condition. It impacts the body's power to break down an essential nutrient called phenylalanine. Normally, the liver makes an enzyme designated as phenylalanine hydroxylase, which transforms phenylalanine into tyrosine. In people who have PKU, this enzyme fails to function properly. As a result,
